5-Second Review: Dark Places by Gillian Flynn

dark placesMore like 2-second review. Thing is, I was going to pick up Gone Girl, but then I read the blurb of this one– and it pretty much has my name on it. I won’t recap the plot (everyone else did already) so I’ll just say it was amazing. Atmospheric, dark, and really messed-up. Not a single one of the characters was likable– and that’s the beauty of it. It’s easy to get cheap sympathy for a woobie character, but to make you care what happens to someone you despise– now that’s art, and Gillian Flynn is good at it. In fact, Dark Places pokes fun at and gleefully deconstructs that whole trope: our heroic survivor is a kleptomaniac with a huge sense of entitlement and overall not a pleasant person.
